SLOs for math students at UNCA specify "breadth and depth of knowledge", and "an understanding of the roles played by mathematics in society at large". This talk will suggest (without prescribing anything) that we can best accomplish the second goal by favoring depth over breadth in the first, and that this approach---learning fewer things while learning them more thoroughly --- is the best way to prepare students for calculus. I shall offer a few specimens of exercises to deepen understanding.
